Dr. Peter Hwang is Professor of Otolaryngology and Neurosurgery (by courtesy) at Stanford University. He serves as Vice Chair and Chief of the Division of Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery. His research interests include clinical outcomes of endoscopic skull base surgery; effects of air pollution and wildfires on sinonasal health; and development of innovative medical devices for treating sinus disease.
Dr. Hwang has served in leadership of the American Rhinologic Society for over a decade, most recently as President of the society. Dr. Hwang has authored or co-authored over 300 publications and 3 textbooks in rhinology. He is passionate about mentoring and coaching, having trained over 30 fellows who now serve in academic leadership across the US and globally. |
Climate Change and Sinonasal Disease
As catastrophic weather events and worsening air pollution become a global matter of fact, the impact of our changing environment on the health of the upper respiratory tract is becoming increasingly recognized. As the “first responder” of the airway, the nasal cavity and sinuses contend with a potent array of inhaled inflammatory particles and irritants. We will examine the epidemiologic and pathophysiologic evidence that the air we breathe may be making us sick.
Pathways to Entrepreneurship: Lessons Learned from Silicon Valley
As surgeons, we are naturally creative problem solvers, and many of our innovative approaches may provide opportunities for commercialization. We may have entrepreneurial aspirations, but are often under-prepared for the business aspects of having an entrepreneurial side career. The objectives of this presentation are to:
- Describe methods of protecting your intellectual property
- Understand ways to determine your value as a consultant
- Anticipate pitfalls of launching your own start-up
